Aged in an 8-year Wild Turkey bourbon barrel, this Sumatra lot from Gajah Estate offers a rare expression of Indonesian coffee shaped by both origin and cask. “Gajah”—Indonesian for elephant—pays tribute to the wild elephants that roam freely through the land, reflecting strength, presence, and intention at every level of production.

Selected in concert with The Whiskey Blendery, the barrel brings forward vanilla cream, oak spice, and bourbon sweetness, seamlessly integrating with the coffee’s natural fruit character. With this bold and robust coffee, notes of Luxardo cherry take the lead, hints of tamarind and gentle florals lift the cup, carried by a rounded sweetness and grounded structure that make the profile powerful, warming, expressive, and remarkably balanced.

This project begins in the rugged Gayo Highlands of Central Aceh, Indonesia. Naturally processed—a rarity in Sumatra—ripe cherries are dried whole under the sun, allowing fruit sugars to fully infuse the bean and create a clean yet fruit-forward foundation well suited for barrel aging. Inside the barrel, the coffee evolves as natural sweetness integrates with mature bourbon character, drawing out layers of oak spice, vanilla cream, and gentle warmth without overpowering the cup. As it cools, the cherry deepens and tamarind provides lift, resulting in a coffee that honors Aceh’s coffee heritage and the craft behind both barrel and roast.
